Standing Up for Patient Safety and the Future of Traditional Chinese Medicine in BC
Last Friday, I had the opportunity to attend an important meeting with leaders from our profession and representatives from the provincial government. The meeting was held to discuss upcoming changes to how Traditional Chinese Medicine and herbal practice may be regulated in British Columbia.
Although I was not the main speaker, I was there in my role as Vice President of our professional association, listening carefully, sharing perspectives, and supporting the collective voice of our community.
This meeting brought together healthcare leaders, educators, and government officials, including the Minister of Health. The goal was simple but important: to make sure patient safety, professional standards, and public trust remain at the center of any future changes.
Traditional Chinese Medicine has been regulated in British Columbia since 2003. Practitioners go through years of formal education, clinical training, and licensing exams before serving the public. This system protects patients and ensures that herbal prescriptions, acupuncture, and treatments are safe and appropriate.
During the meeting, many representatives shared real stories from patients who have benefited from properly regulated TCM care. These stories remind us why professional standards matter. When people seek treatment, they deserve to know their practitioner is trained, licensed, and accountable.
For me, this work goes beyond policy discussions. It is about protecting the health and wellbeing of the communities we serve. Every day in my clinic, I see how acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine can improve quality of life, reduce pain, and support long-term health. That trust must be preserved.
I am grateful to be part of a professional community that cares deeply about patient safety, education, and ethical practice. These conversations with government leaders are an important step in ensuring that Traditional Chinese Medicine continues to be practiced responsibly and respected as part of our healthcare system.
I will continue to participate in these discussions, support my colleagues, and advocate for high standards in our profession, always with one goal in mind: protecting the health and wellbeing of our patients.
