Gua Sha (Scraping Therapy) in Greater Vancouver

What Is Gua Sha?

Back of a person with a fresh surgical scar down the middle, with redness and small marks surrounding it, sitting on a bed or examination table.

Gua Sha, also known as scraping therapy, is a traditional healing technique in Chinese Medicine used to release muscle knots, fascia tightness, and internal heat. It involves gently scraping the skin’s surface with a smooth-edged tool to stimulate circulation and promote the body’s natural healing response.

What Does Gua Sha Treat?

A woman with long dark hair, tattoos, and wearing a black tank top and light blue jeans, standing by a large window with her arms crossed, looking upward with a relaxed expression.

This simple yet powerful therapy is commonly used to relieve a wide range of conditions, including:

  • Muscle stiffness and tension

  • Neck and shoulder pain

  • Restlessness or irritability

  • Abnormal thirst or internal heat

  • Early-stage colds and flu

  • General fatigue or sluggish circulation

How It Works

In TCM, Gua Sha is believed to reduce “heat” and stagnant energy (Qi) in the body. By improving blood flow and releasing surface-level stagnation, it helps your body cool down, detox, and recover faster. The treatment may leave temporary red or purple marks, which are viewed as signs of stagnation being released. Each area of clustered redness symbolizes unique change of the body.

Is Gua Sha Right for You?

If you’re dealing with muscle tightness, emotional stress, or heat-related symptoms like frequent colds, Gua Sha may provide fast and natural relief. By loosening fascia and promoting energy flow, this technique helps release built-up tension and support recovery. It’s a gentle, drug-free method that works with your body’s natural healing process.
